Mumbai

We had one day to see Mumbai so took taxis on a whistle stop tour. We visited several view points around the city and the beach.

There is a large open air laundry by the train tracks. Washers rent the basins by the hour and get to work washing the city's clothes and sheets.

One of the most expensive private residences in the world is in Mumbai. Called Antilia it is said to be worth over a billion dollars. After seeing that we took a look at some slums. These seemed to be nice as slums go with proper sewage. Nothing compared to a billion dollars though, Mumbai is certainly a city of contrasts.

During this trip we also visited a Zoroastrian tower of silence. Zoroastrians believe that burying their dead desecrates the earth so put their dead out in the open to be eaten by vultures. They were also one of the first monotheistic religions and worship fire. Thankfully we didn't see any bodies due to trees in the way, a daunting tower of some sort would have been nice though.

That evening we wandered around some of the areas attacked by militants in 2008. It was jarring to hear about the details of the attack and imagine the bustling streets and bars scenes of such carnage.

We also saw the India gate or gateway of India, why give two arches such genetic and vague names? The one in new Delhi was nicer. Next morning up early to fly to Goa, so not too many beers...
